August 29th was my birthday. Last year at this time, I wrote about my bittersweet birthday, as it is also the anniversary of my father’s passing. I try to plan a trip around this time to celebrate the milestone, but also to help me not focus on the sad news I got that morning 17 years ago. This year was no different. As fate would have it, we were invited to celebrate our dear friends’ daughter’s wedding in Chatham on Cape Cod.

Wedding ready!

Chatham is the quintessential seaside town. Though decidedly more low key than my Nantucket, it is fun, preppy and cheerful. It has the sweetest main street, with great restaurants, bars and shopping.

Chatham also boasts the 2 most luxurious resorts on the Cape; the Chatham Bars Inn and the Wequasset Resort and Golf Club. The wedding, held at CBI, was straight out of a fairy tale.

As the season winds down, I can’t help but reflect on how full these last few months have been. Summer started with a bang with our fabulous trip to the South of France. We continued the festivities with so many quick getaways, that I began just leaving my luggage in my closet packed with my essentials.

I am so thankful for each of these experiences. But I can’t help but be even more grateful for the average, routine days this past year has given me. As exciting as each day of travel can be, and as wonderful as it is to experience something new, I hope I never forget the gift of an ordinary day. The gift of a day with no bad news. A day that doesn’t knock the wind out of you. A day so predictable that you take it for granted. Those days are really the best parts of this journey.
