I don’t ski. And because of that, I never really had any desire to go on a ski vacation. Then one winter, we were invited to spend a weekend in January in Jackson Hole. I had never considered going to Jackson Hole, let alone in January. And looking at the average temps that time of year, I wasn’t sure why anyone would! But now that the opportunity was before us, why not?

Not us skiing in Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole in January was tundra cold, but sunny and astonishingly beautiful. Sitting at the base of the Teton Mountains at the Four Seasons, this was like no other vacation we had ever experienced. We took a lesson at their ski school and though it was about 20 below zero, it honestly didn’t feel that cold. While we enjoyed our lessons, it was clear to us that this middle-aged couple was never going to become avid skiers. Yet, the memories of that unique trip stayed with us.

A few years later, we were invited to spend a weekend in Aspen in February at the Hotel Jerome. Aspen, the winter playground for the rich and famous? How could we say no?

Aspen lived up to its reputation. Chic, expensive and a haven for the jetset, it was also breathtaking. It reminded me of a winter Nantucket-a small town filled with fabulous restaurants, art galleries and shopping, with snow-capped majestic mountains as a backdrop.

A few years later we decided to spend our March spring break at the Saint Regis Deer Valley in Park City, Utah. We fell in love with winters out west. But what’s the point of taking a ski vacation if you don’t ski? You’d be surprised at how quickly your days will fill up in these winter wonderlands.

Apres-Ski

Let’s start with the best part of a winter break. There is something about being out in the cold that makes you really appreciate a luxurious hotel and its apres-ski offerings. In Aspen, The Little Nell sits at the base of Aspen (Ajax) Mountain, famous for its five star dining and its social scene.

The Saint Regis, both in Aspen and Deer Valley, takes apres-ski to a whole new level. Whether you’re looking for daily s’mores and hot chocolate for the kids or nightly champagne sabering for the adults, their apres ski game is strong.

Hiking

Winter ski destinations all offer a variety of hiking paths ranging from the easy to extremely challenging. Hiking is one of our favorite activities, any season, but it’s particularly gorgeous when there is snow on the ground and the air is crisp and cold. It allows us to really appreciate and take in views that we don’t see very often in our every day lives. It’s also a great way of getting in some fun exercise.

Shopping and Dining

Where to begin. Each luxury ski destination has its own personality. If you’re looking for authentic, straight out of a western movie, locally sourced shopping and casual dining, Jackson Hole is for you. If you’re looking for laid back, but super chic and very expensive (think Gucci, Prada, Moncler), then Aspen is calling your name. Deer Valley and Park City offer a quiet sophistication and luxury, which falls right in between the other two.

Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling in Park City

For the truly adventurous, a day spent snowmobiling is one of the best ways to see as much of the breathtaking scenery (and wild animals!) as possible. It’s also great way to get the heart rate going! A good tour company can customize the experience to your riding level and desires.

Snowshoeing

Deer Valley by Snowshoe

The closest we will ever come again to skiing! It’s our hands down favorite way to spend the day in ski country. It can give you a similar feel and vantage point of skiing, but without the terrifying lack of control (or is it just me who feels that way?). We love to take guided tours which are helpful in not only keeping you safe, but also give you an opportunity to learn more about the area.

Spa

Luxury ski resorts usually go hand in hand with luxury spas. And what’s better than a luxurious massage or facial at a world class spa after a day spent in the snow. Or perhaps you would prefer a little oxygen therapy to battle the high altitude? The Remede Spa at the Saint Regis in Aspen and Deer Valley is the perfect antidote to a day spent in the elements.

There’s no question that my family and I usually prefer trading cold and dreary New England for sunny beaches in the winter. But there is so much to love at a luxury ski resort that the beach will sometimes just have to wait until the summer.
